Chapter Sixteen
2025...
As soon as the door began to creak open, Rose felt something deep inside her heart â and deep inside her mind â telling her to stop. She hesitated, still touching the handle, but she knew she'd come too far to back away now, so finally she gave the door another push; she felt some slight resistance, but finally it swung all the way open and she found herself standing at the rear of a large open stage.
âI've seen this before,â she whispered.
Stepping forward, she felt a board shift slightly beneath her right foot â so the resultant creaking sound, which came a fraction of a second later â was no surprise.
As she made her way toward the centre of the stage, her footsteps rang out in what appeared to be an otherwise entirely still and silent space. She saw row after row of seating rising up on three levels all around, and she couldn't help but wonder how and why anyone would ever build such a grand theatre inside their own home. She knew that the Redclyffes had put on plays for decades, that for a while their great hall had been a social hub for the entire county, and much of that grandeur remained even though the place had been abandoned for a while now.
Stopping, she looked at the empty seats, and she felt almost compelled to stare at each of them in turn, just to be absolutely certain that there was nobody there.
âHello?â she called out, although her voice immediately sounded so small and weak in the vast space. âI'm guessing that there's no-one here but...â
As her words trailed off, she tried again to remember exactly where she'd seen this place before. Her mind felt strangely muddled in a way that was completely alien to her; she was accustomed to having pin-sharp thoughts and near-perfect recollection of events, so it was strange now for her to find that many of her memories were all mixed up with one another. At the same time, she knew that she'd seen this exact place once before, and it took only a few more seconds for her to remember when and where.
âThe Wrackton,â she whispered. âBut... how?â

2017...
Sitting all alone on one of the single beds in room fourteen, Rose turned to the next page in her tattered paperback copy of Prince Caspian. As usual she was totally focused on the book and barely aware of anything happening around her, but after a few more seconds she finally looked up.
She saw the door to the bathroom, but otherwise she couldn't quite work out what had caught her attention. After a moment, however, she set the book aside on the bed and got to her feet, and she slowly began to approach the bathroom door, which had been left closed.
As she passed the window, she looked outside and saw a ghostly woman on the promenade wearing a red dress. Not really feeling as if this figure stood out from the rest of
